No More Spills With Our Drinking Solutions!

Does your child struggle to sip from a glass? Does your child find it difficult to hold their glass for themselves and drink? Are you concerned to give your child china or glass cups and glasses? They say to make sure your child doesn’t hold the rim between their teeth, however can you really watch them at every second?

One solution is to provide your child with a straw and teach them to use this. This skill can be taught to any child who is able to understand your instructions. This illuminates the concern for damage to teeth (or lips) from biting on glass or china, and is the perfect solution for where a child is unable to sip from their glass.

Using a straw may not be the solution for all; for example, if a child is unable to handle their cup, maybe they are prone to knocking the cup (or glass) over, or struggle to place the glass down on the table when they have finished. In this scenario what you really need is a cup with a lid, and one that features a drinking spout, or more specifically a non spill drinking spout!

At Mobility 365 we have a range of cups, mugs and bottles to assist children and adults alike with disabilities. Some of our most popular drinking solutions include the following features:

  • Non spill valves
  • Large handles and/or grips
  • Integral straws
  • Lids with spouts
  • Ergonomically angled bodies designed to reduce the amount of wrist action and head tilting needed when in use
  • Weighted bases

A fantastic example is featured Non-spill Cups to your right. These cups are designed with an angled spout to facilitate ease of use and have the benefit of a grooved body to ensure a better grip. With an optional and unique lid, you can ensure that drinking time is free from spillages, plus the spout has a one flow valve so that in the event of the cup being knocked over or dropped, there will be no spills.

  • Microwave and dishwasher safe up to 130C degrees.
  • Supplied with either a lid with a small aperture for liquids, or a large aperture for semi solids
  • A choice of colours is also available.
  • Capacity 200ml (7fl.oz.).
  • Grooved sides to facilitate grip.
  • Volume calibrations on side of cup.
  • Prices start from as little as £2.11!

Pressure Sores – How You Can Make it STOP

A very worrying statistic brought to us by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), states that the number of hospital patients who develop pressure sores (also known as decubitus ulcers, pressure ulcers or bed sores) has raised by 63% in the last 10 years! Considering how technology and research is advancing all the time this is a very surprising statistic which can only leave us all with a sense of fear for our old. This effects those whose mobility or sensation of pressure is impaired including the elderly, stroke victims, people with dementia or head injuries and anyone who is bedridden or confined to a wheelchair.

A pressure sore is basically caused by a constant pressure to the skin, which inevitably cuts off the circulation to the area. Pressure sores can occur on any area of the body where pressure is not relieved, however they are more commonly found over bonier and pronounced areas such as the heels, ankles or the sacrum as these areas have less fatty tissue and muscle to protect the skin from the surface it is against and from the pressure against the bone.

Pressure sores are very common in the medical profession as doctors and nurses deal with the problem on a daily basis. They can be caused by friction on delicate skin from rubbing on sheets which is common on bedridden patients and those confined to wheelchairs, but also from casts or braces.

At Mobility 365 we quite a range of pressure reducing items such as heel protectors, pressure reducing mattresses, overlays, chair cushions, elbow protectors, bath cushions, toilet pads, wheelchair cushions, wheelchair arm cushions and more. You will find that they are made using a variety of different materials such as foam, memory foam, gel and air. You will also find a selection of adaptors which can be used with your existing furniture in order to adjust it so that the risk of pressure sores is reduced and the patient is more comfortable.

If you’d like to discuss your options or would like any more information about how you or your medical facility can prevent the burden of pressure sores, then do get in touch with us here at Mobility 365 where we’re always more than happy to help – 01252 744415.

Easy Enjoyable Meal Times!

When a person suffers with limited grip and dexterity, tremors, decreased hand eye co-ordination or poor range of motion, eating can be a laborious task. This is also true when a person has limited strength which can often happen with age or of course when the individual has only one arm, or hand. In these circumstances meal times can often be messy, frustrating, even humiliating which can have a knock on effect on the person confidence. The answer is not to feed them, as in most scenarios this can be seen as demeaning and will only leave the individual feeling helpless. The answer is to provide them with the tools that will allow them to continue feeding themselves and lead a normal, independent life.

At Mobility 365 you’ll find that we have a range of disability plates and bowls which are uniquely designed to give those at a disadvantage, their independence when eating. As there are various different types of difficulties and demands, you will find a great many solutions to cover needs across the whole spectrum. For example you will find plates and bowls with high sides, suction plates, plates with partitions, insulated plates and bowls and popular range of plates and bowls with a scoop facility.

High sided plates mean that the user is less likely to spill their food over the edges and suction plates will prevent the plate from slipping and sliding when the individual is trying to scoop from their dinner wear. Partitioned plates prevent the food from mixing up while the user eats whilst also providing sides to use as leverage to get food onto the cutlery. Insulated plates are a great invention which prevent the individuals food from going cold while they eat; a great idea where feeding takes more time than usual! Scoop plates provide a tall, curved edge which food can be pushed towards and then manoeuvred onto the fork or spoon; ideal for increased control when using one hand.

With so many options available to help facilitate with the independent eating of many different individuals personal difficulties, there really is no reason why you or your loved one cannot lead a normal life in terms of meal times. If you’re in need of some help or advise, please feel free to call us Mon – Fri between 9am and 5pm on 01252 744415 where one of our team will be happy to help you.

Never Underestimate The Importance of Caring For Your Feet!

Did you know that in many instances your foot, ankle, shin, knee, hip or even back pain could be due to poor foot positioning and shock absorption? With a simple insole you can kiss goodbye to your aches and pains enjoying pain free sport and general day to day life. The key however is to choosing the right insole for your foot problem, which – unless you know your specific medical complaint – can be a process of trial and error. Many people find that they need to try a few different types of insoles before they get it right, eventually finding one that will enable them to enjoy a better quality of living.

If you suffer with any of the following, then you will be able to find an insole here at Mobility 365 that can ease your suffering:

  • Daily Life Aches & Pains – A simple cushioning support for your heel and arch can relieve various general aches – take a look at our foot care appliances.
  • Medical Aches & Pains – For those of us who suffer with Diabetes, Arthritis, misaligned knees, and similar medical complaints, our insoles will assist with circulation and support the abuse and shock that the foot endures throughout the course of the day.
  • Specific Medical Conditions – Problems such as Plantar Fasciitis, shin splints, heel pain, stress fracture, metatarsalgia, neuropathy’s, dissipating shock, Achilles tendonitis, calf strain, ball of foot pain and over-pronation or supination can be relived with the use of our shock absorbing insoles.
  • Athletic Pain – Athletes such as runners and joggers will find they are more likely to suffer with problems due to poor foot support when practising their sport without the use of specialist insoles. Our performance insoles and shock absorbing insoles will provide the extra cushioning and shock absorption needed in order to perform at your best without any negative consequences to your body.

Taking into account that the average person takes between 8,000 and 10,000 steps a day it would be fair to say that we should respect our feet. They are a vital part of the body which enable us to get from A to B taking the entire weight of our bodies. Consisting of 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, 38 muscles and tendons, the feet are more complicated than we give them credit for; it’s clear to see why mistreating them can only lead to complications later down the line. Without the proper care, we are likely to experience foot problems which will inevitably lead to various other complaints in the shins, calves, knees, hips and back. Putting preventative measures in place to protect your feet will only care for the body higher up the kinetic chain and for the small price of a pair of insoles, we’ve no excuse for not looking after our feet!

Can Drinking Water Help You Lose Weight?

For those of us STILL trying to shed those Christmas pounds, we may well have just found the answer! Mobility 365 has been looking into the effects of drinking water and how this effects our weight. We take an unbiased look at what the Metro reports on the findings by researchers from the University of North Carolina.

The Metro reports that “Drinking water can help dieters lose at least five per cent of their bodyweight.” This is based upon research that hoped to find evidence supporting the common sense theory that replacing high calorie drinks with water or diet drinks will help with weight loss. It sounds obvious enough; however were the findings strictly true?

The evidence was based around a small study of overweight and obese adults, and looked at whether encouraging them to replace sugar-sweetened drinks with water or diet drinks could help them lose weight without them making any other dietary changes. Studies found that those willing to drink water lost on average 2.0% of their body weight and those on diet drinks lost 2.5% of their body weight. Those in the control group lost 1.8% and so the difference in weight loss between the groups was not actually hugely significant.

After all the hype a separate analysis did find that those who switched to water or diet drinks were in fact more likely to lose 5% of their body weight, however to summarise and look upon the study objectively, on average, the groups did not differ in weight loss.

It just goes to show that people do believe what they read in the headlines without actually looking into the news themselves. In most cases is you delve a little deeper you will find that the headlines are purely attention grabbers and simply not true. In this case, it may be worth pointing out that the study was funded by a leading bottled water company in the US! It may also be worth adding that those who consumed the water/diet drinks in the study were actually given the bottled water or dietary beverages; if this were in real life, people might not be as good at sticking to drinking low calorie alternative drinks if they had to purchase them themselves.

Those of use with some common sense will of course know that water is the healthiest beverage to consume and contains no additives, sugars or chemicals so for a healthy diet, drink water daily in place of your carbonated and sugary drinks to enjoy benefits such as detoxification and better skin!
